Food and packaging machinery has apparently bottomed out
cautious optimism: The worst appears to be," said Richard Clemens,
managing director of the VDMA Association of Food Processing and
Packaging Machinery, at the trade fair Drinktec 2009 in Munich.

trends. Image: Krones
Last year, the German production of food machinery and packaging
machinery grew by VDMA figures by 5% to 11.1 billion euros. The
industry, with around 600 companies and 60 500 employees, thus laying
the production side in the tenth year in a row. One in three food
processing and packaging machinery which is exported worldwide comes
from a German production. In many sub-fields - like in the beverage
industry - the market share is even higher: 60% of exported brewing
machines are for example from Germany, with beverage packaging
machines, the professional association of food processing and
packaging machinery to the percentage estimate at least 50%.
2008, brought food and packaging machinery manufacturers and exports record
In 2008 the export deliveries have risen by a further 6% to 8.1
billion €. "This record is probably the last time being in 2009,
certainly not achieved," says Clemens. "For the wake of the

Change in the packaging machine parameters completely traced
LC-screen animated graphics can be shown that deepen the understanding
and handling machine.
Example is illustrated in the animation for the tray sealer to use,
how will a change in the cover sheet, the new film is threaded.
Another "lesson" shows how tools can be changed. This includes the
"tool-change assistant" both movies and interactive elements to
practice.
Change in the packaging machine parameters completely traced
All operations in the production process can be recorded in the rest
completely. An industrial PC with an integrated PC controller IPC 06
and the Windows XP operating system allows the connection to the
corporate network via the LAN. About the so-called wireless user
login, a chip card-based login to the system is possible. In this way,
unauthorized use not the machine.
In the standard function can change the machine parameters by the
operator to understand the role level. To track changes in parameters
at the individual level, the machine control can be optionally
expanded.

semi-skilled persons in the situation, the complex control of the
packaging machine in a short time without any training manual and take
over. It is sufficient to instruction in the visual language of the
user interface. The implementation of the control commands in
pictograms provides the operator more control. In this way he can
react faster and proactively act. This increases the operating safety.
Visualization improves understanding of the packaging machinery
2.0 HMI visualized but animated not only individual control commands,
but draws the whole packaging process dar. making it both user
interface and control terminal. Standard continuously displays
information about the production order and carried as status
information. These include the number of finished packages, the clock
speed of the machine, the remainder of the lid or foil and the number
of defective packaging discharged.
Through the integrated sensors measure the Multivac also during the
entire packaging process critical parameters such as sealing time,
sealing pressure and temperature and the vacuum. The data collected
through the IPC-06-machine control and processed via the HMI and 2.0
for the operator clearly visualized. The parameters are stored for
each product to be packaged in the form of a so-called recipe.

Ergonomic controls on packaging machinery to prevent stress
refers to the design of human-machine interface. The field of action
was developed initially in connection with computers and workstations,
but then extended to the operation of machinery and equipment. Your
goal is to optimally adapt software to the needs of the operating
personnel and the demands of the job field.
Ergonomic controls with packaging machinery to prevent stress
In the packaging industry are increasing software ergonomics
ultimately the safety and quality of processes and products to be
packaged. Poor ergonomics leads to poor processes and these in turn to
productivity or quality. In the worst case, functions that the machine
has not used, because the user does not find or can not deal with
them.
Not ergonomically designed user interfaces can the operator may also
lead to psychological stress, lead as stress or frustration. This may
in turn negatively affect job performance. The more secure an employee
feels in machine operation, however, experience shows that the higher
process reliability and quality of the package.
Older workers also benefit from better packaging machinery-Ergonomics
The trend to improved ergonomics is driven largely by the younger
generation who do not want to give up their intuitive interfaces. But
it's not just the younger ones that are driving massive ergonomics. On
the other hand, there are sometimes older workers who want an
easy-to-screen interface that allows them to master the increasing
complexity of tasks.
control complex packaging machinery by pointing a finger
Software ergonomics makes the control of packaging machines to use. In
its human-machine interface HMI 2.0 Multivac is an easy to understand
icons and animations - and thus optimizing the packaging process in
terms of efficiency and safety.
The power range of the two-lane tray sealers is, Multivac T 850 at
about 80-100 packages per minute. The machine is fully integrated into
a packaging line.
Whether navigation device, smart phone or ticket machine - most
people are familiar touch screens today from their home environment.
As the device must be operated, is self-explanatory: just click on the
graphic symbols and icons and follow the intuitive user interface.
The same principle has applied to operate its Multivac packaging
machinery: Via the HMI operator interface 2.0 even slightly tech-savvy
and semi-skilled operators use the full functionality of the machinery
or lines by pointing a finger. Multivac has to "translate" the
functions of the machine control system in easy to understand icons
and animations.
Pictures facilitate operation of the packaging machine
When designing the user interface, the machine manufacturer had
resorted to findings of cognitive science: The human brain stores
information from mainly pictorial. Therefore, icons and symbols are
most often detected faster and more intuitive than reading text.
Tapping the icons correspond with the index finger in turn, the
natural gestures of the people. Studies have shown that the user
experience with touch panel is almost always positive.
The operator interface HMI 2.0 is integrated with all automatic
packaging machines of new generation (Thermoforming packaging
machines, tray sealers and chamber machines tape) by Multivac. This is
a 12-inch LCD touchscreen, which is associated with a complete
industrial PC. The operator terminal can be rotated and pivoted.
Display
Faster operation of the packaging machinery using touch-sensitive display
Similar to phone and navigation device the operator selects the
graphical icon by pointing a finger. The input via keyboard or command
line is deprecated in principle. Significantly ergonomic today can
even use complex functions on a touch-sensitive display. Compared to
previous models, the HMI is 2.0 also significantly faster.
German packaging machinery reinforces leadership position
successful 2006: The production of packaging machinery increased year
on year by 8 to 5 percent, reaching a volume of 4.6 billion €. Of
this, around 1.4 billion euros on drinks packaging machines. In the
German packaging machinery industry are around 300, mostly
medium-sized enterprises operate with approximately 26,000 employees.
The export business is the engine of growth of the packaging machinery
industry. In 2006, worldwide machinery and equipment worth around € 13
billion were exported. Thus laying the export increased by 11 percent.
With an export volume of 4.4 billion euros, Germany has a share of
world exports by 34 percent. A look at the development of the five
leading exporters of packaging machines, and the combined last year 72
percent of world export volume to itself, shows that Germany was able
to expand its leadership position in 2006. The export growth of 15
percent in Germany was almost twice as high as also the respectable
growth of the Italian packaging machine builders with 8 percent. About
90 percent of the packaging machines manufactured in Germany are
exported. The proportion is even higher than the export rate of the
Affeldt Packaging Machines GmbH plant occupation was successful
01.04.2010 Ι The 160 employees of the engineering operation Affeldt
GmbH have won their first jobs. Through its 48 hour long sit-they
could prevent the operation is being plundered. Since 26 March
continues the tradition of a provisional liquidator operating in
Neudorf. The staff has started work again and finished the short-time
work.
The Affeldt's employees responded last week and promptly occupied
their factory. The management had faced a surprise with the insolvency
of the company. The plant occupation lasted 48 hours - and it worked:
The staff could prevent valuable equipment and machinery were
transported for packaging equipment.
Employees get back to work and money
Since 26 March 2010 leads the lawyer Dr Klaus margins continue to
operate as a provisional liquidator. The short-time work was
suspended. The Affeldt-employed since received back to work and above
all, money. The IG Metall Unterelbe now calls a long-term prospects
for the employees. "This partial success was achieved in Affeldt only
through the solidarity of the IG Metall members. With the concrete
plant occupation prevents the further looting of the company," said
Uwe Zabel is happy.
Contractually guaranteed wage prospects for employees required
